No matter how many packages you dispatch every month, you ought to use a package management system for efficient operations.

Package tracking software and systems have become for every business that deals in the delivery of products from their store or warehouse. The primary objective of such systems is to ensure smooth logistics operation and also to keep customer updated with information about the details of the route of the package and the estimated time of delivery.

But it’s important for you to understand how these systems work before you can maximize them.

Here, we will take a quick look at how package tracking system works.

Bar Code Generation

It is the first step taken by any courier service when a package is handed over to them by a customer. Personnel working at the courier service will generate a bar code and attach on the package. This barcode generated helps in tracking the parcel and getting all other important updates from the time it leaves the courier office until it reaches the customer’s destination.

Storing The Details

Once the bar code is generated the courier team enters all the information related to the parcel such as the time it reached the facility, the location of the delivery, and any other details relevant and useful in the delivery using their custom package receiving software. All this information can be easily fetched at any time later through a scanner at a different location.

Receiving the package

Once the parcel leaves the courier company’s office, it reaches to their warehouse where the warehouse team receives it and updates the log – putting the exact date and time when they receive the product.

Re-Scanning The Bar Code

Before the warehouse team hand over the parcel to the delivery team they re-scan the parcel and create another log with the right time and date.

Out For Delivery

At this point, the product in the warehouse is re-scanned and another log is created before it leaves for delivery to the customer. This information is stored back in the courier company’s tracking system, which includes the date and time the product the warehouse for delivery.

Package Delivery

When the package is delivered to the right location, the courier team updates the status of the delivery as “Delivered” using a package logging software. The team also updates other relevant information such as the time of product delivery, recipient’s name, etc.

Tracking systems have become extremely advanced over the years. Even if your package is thousands of miles away you can easily track it in just a few seconds. Besides they also help the courier to reduce indecencies of loss and mishandling.
